Lane's going to Blackwell's Island
Today we are taking a walking tour of the place where some of my favorite creepy scenes take place. It’s a small slip of land between Manhattan and Queens, today called Roosevelt Island. In the Art Deco Mystery series, during the late 1930s, the island was named Welfare Island, but for many, would always be known as its original name that carried a slightly darker overtone: Blackwell’s Island. The little island was a place of lost souls, it had a prison, a work house, a small pox hospital and the infamous lunatic asylum, infiltrated by the renowned Nellie Bligh, Metropolitan Hospital Lunatic Asylum. We’ll take a look at Blackwell’s Island looked like during Lane Sanders’ time period and what the booming Roosevelt Island looks like today.
